Δισκάδικα στο Βουκουρέστι - Record Stores In Bucharest (2019)

Our latest stroll around the world, in which, among other things we aim to discover record stores in the city streets, led us to the Romanian capital of Bucharest (well, the truth is that Riverside’s tour led us there, but we really enjoyed the visit ...). The truly and maybe unexpectedly beautiful Balkan city with its imposing center, is a very friendly place to walk around. It is huge, with well-preserved buildings and wide and endless avenues and dozens of parks, those being some of the main features. For those who have visited Paris, the city's atmosphere will remind you enough of the French capital. It used to be called "Little Paris of the East" (designed by French architects). Indeed, especially in downtown Bucharest, the feeling is even greater, more imposing, and with quite cleaner streets than the French capital. So, choose Bucharest, because it's really great, and flying from Athens makes it just a breath away!
On our main issue now, which is “the record stores” of the city, well we didn’t discover quite a lot. And those existing are just about of the same style (with some very important exceptions mentioned below, that alone enough to change the overall picture). Just note that the ones we found are so spatially distributed on the city greater center, that if you do not want to use public transportation (as we did not), but chose to walk in order to get the vibe of the city, get ready for plenty of walking. The list is, however, based on the degree of importance / interest (in our view, obviously) of the record stores and not by their position on the map.

Indies, electronica, post punk, progressive rock, post rock, metal.

Get ready for quite a lot of walking because although it is in within a reasonable distance from the center, it is quite far (2.5-3 km). You take the long road that starts from the "The People's House" ("People's", rather weird way of calling it, at that time) and you walk long enough, until you start feeling tired (its part of the test you have to pass) ... At some point you turn right and get into a residential neighborhood, with very few shops. Don't worry, you’re going on the right direction. At some point you will see, following your gps, a mezzanine and you will start to leap or stand on your toes in order to see anything through the window. On the next turn, in the narrow passage, you will see a courtyard and, on its fence, a doorphone. You press the button, the door opens, you walk for a while, you reach the main entrance and all of a sudden you are in the vinyl and cd paradise. It took all that trouble and the trip to the outermost city’s straits, but it was worth it. In a relatively large, triangular, rather simply decorated space, you will find thousands of cds and vinyls, t-shirts, accessories and everything else you can imagine. What impressed me the most, especially in vinyl sector is that -to a large extent- these were new releases, fresh stuff. Indies, electronica, post punk, progressive rock, post rock, metal. Lots of stuff that were published after, let’s say, 2014 could be found there. At the cd sector, there was also a great variety of classic rock, blues, folk. Impressive really. And even though it is in a not so touristic area, if I had to pick a place to send a friend who wanted to dig up some music in Bucharest, this would definitely be Niche.

Cărturești is like a landmark for the city. Especially the one in the old town can be found in all tourist guides. But we were lucky enough -and due to the location of our hotel (very central avenue, just outside the old town)-, to find a second shop by the same name, which in our opinion is even more impressive in an architectural and design style. But, especially in the music sector, it is even better than its most famous brother, in the center. The store, (exterior and interior), is one of the most beautiful sites we have ever seen. It is a large, multi-leveled old house which has been recently reconstructed. Sculptures, corridors and bridges link the dozens of rooms (small ones or a bit larger). In every room you can find something different. Books, toys, wines, kitchen utensils, computers, home appliances, textiles, gift items, cards and everything you can imagine. Two of the rooms are dedicated to music. You can find just about everything: Indies, pop, metal and plenty of Romanian music (older, folk and contemporary pop). More CDs than vinyls. So, although it's not exclusively a record store, it's one of our favorite places for digging for music in Bucharest.

Indies, metal, classic rock, reggae, κλασσική μουσική, jazz, pop, hip hop.

This is the attraction store in the (old) city we mentioned above. You will find it being advertised in every city guide, even in the airplanes' magazine. And all the talking and the admiration concerning it, is not accidental or unfair. Three stunning, coloured white, floors, with a huge void in the middle, waiting for you to enter. The sunlight passing through the central skylight, “playing with the shades” on the walls, making the space look like a moving carousel. It's basically a bookstore, but it has a lot of other stuff. The music department can be found on its big basement. Lots of vinyls and cds, fresh and older releases. Indies, metal, classic rock, reggae, classical music, jazz, pop, hip hop. As with mentioned about its “brother store” above, you should definitely visit it, even if music is not necessarily the main thing you are looking for.

Θα βρείτε μεγάλη ποικιλία σε ντόπια μουσική αλλά και world, jazz, new age κλπ.

This is a very large shop located on one of Bucharest's most beautiful shopping streets, Calea Victorei. Its main focus is musical instruments but a quite big space of the store is dedicated to vinyls and cds. You will find a wide variety of local music as well as world, jazz, new age etc. There is, however, a rock department (classic, hard rock, metal) as well as some pop! And yes, If you are looking for ... Greek-island folk music or even ... Nikos Vertis, this is the place you need you visit.

We made an attempt reaching Misbits on foot. So, the "trip" was a long one, with the nice weather being,fortunately, on our side. We passed through some amazingly different neighbourhoods. Saw some luxurious villas and… embassies, but also some parts of the real city with community houses, plenty of poverty, without the tourism and the attention being shed to the city center. Arriving at the record shop, we came across a high iron door, which had a courtyard hidden behind it. No sign of a record shop, nothing around as seemed like something close to that. Just before deciding to leave the place, we saw a doorbell, we pressed 3-4 buttons and soon the sound of the unlocking door brought a smile on our faces. Beautiful graffiti on the courtyard wall lead you to the main shop, where a tiny reception and two other rooms are located. Misbits was founded by a well-known Bucharest dj and 90% of his material (vinyls) focuses on techno, house and dance music in general. You will also find plenty of singles from various decades of dance, even disco! Very nice, DIY, warm and cosy space. It was worth the walk to discover it.

Tου περπατήματος συνέχεια. Εντάξει, το ψάξιμο για το misbits και καπάκι το Rockers μας τσάκισε λίγο, όμως ευτυχώς είχε καταπληκτική μέρα και έτσι κατά τη διαδρομή βγάλαμε 456 μπουφάν, ζακέτες πουκάμισα κλπ αφού ο ιδρώτας άρχιζε να στάζει. Το Rockers Vinyl Café είναι ένα πολύ ωραίο μέρος, άξιζε το τριγύρισμα σε…περίεργες περιοχές της πόλης όμως η αναλογία των 3 λέξεων που συνθέτουν το όνομά του είναι 10%-10%-80%. Ελάχιστα βινύλια (με Kraftwerk, ένα single Laurent Garnier και μια… Φαραντούρη να ξεχωρίζουν), αλλά ευχάριστος χώρος, με decks για dj-sets και όμορφη μικρή αυλή για καφέ, ποτό ή κάποιο light snack! Δίσκο δεν πήραμε, ίσως και να έπρεπε τελικά για να στηρίξουμε την πατρίδα και τέτοια (Φαραντούρη γαρ), αλλά…οκ, όχι. Όμορφο καφέ, αξίζει να το τσεκάραρετε (όχι για τους δίσκους του), αλλά θα πρότεινα να το κάνετε βραδινές ώρες ώστε να πετύχετε και κάποιο dj set. {UPDATE: ΔΥΣΤΥΧΩΣ ΕΚΛΕΙΣΕ}

And we kept on walking. While we were looking for Rockers, after our search for Misbits, we got quite tired, the sun shining made it enjoyable for us, but we had to take of some of our 456 jackets, shirts, etc. as the sweat started dripping. Rockers Vinyl Café is a great place, it was worth the stroll in ... some farout areas of the city but the 3 words that create its name are like that: 10% -10%(VINYL) -80%(CAFÉ). Ok, it is quite a rock place I could say, but with quite few vinyls (with Kraftwerk, a single by Laurent Garnier and the singer from our country, Maria Faradouri to stand out), but it is very cosy place, with decks for dj-sets and a nice little courtyard for having coffee, a drink or some light snacks! We didn't buy any record, maybe we should have supported our homeland (Faradouri), but ... ok, no. Great coffee quality by the way, worth checking it out, but I would suggest doing it in the evenings where you can catch some dj sets.  {UPDATE: CLOSED DOWN UNFORTUNATELY}

Rock shop is located few steps away from Magazinul Muzica. You will find quite a few vinyls, both used and new. In its small space, there are a lot of cds too, clothes and accessories. Vinyls (genres: classic rock, pop, grunge, metal punk, etc.) are in alphabetical order but not grouped by genre. Slayer and Sade are comfortably laying close by. It has mostly things that one can expect, but definitely it worths a visit because while digging you might find stuff you can’t imagine.

Somewhere In the city center, but tangled in the narrow streets you will find a beautiful humble little square, without any obvious interest, at least at first sight. But if you look closer, you will notice a nice back-yard facing the square through an old  entrance. Inside it, there is a nice (rock-ish style) cafe/bistro. Further back, you find the main building entrance. Ring the bell (though the door is usually open) and turn right. You see a glass-window of a pretty nice and up-to-date small recordshop. The space is attentive and warm. The material, vinyl mostly, includes pop, rock, jazz, dance, experimental and electro, local or not. Certainly, well worth a visit after having a coffee, some sweet or a beer in the yard.

We hope you have nice strolls and some great vinyl digging!
